The Drastic project is excited to announce the latest phase of activity from its French Demonstrator: a re-used ceiling tiles installation in Aubervilliers, Seine-Saint-Denis, France.

Designed for multiple life cycles

Although ceiling tiles are often designed for reuse within office spaces, they are mostly landfilled, missing a crucial opportunity to increase circularity and reduce carbon emissions across the European built environment via their reuse.

Drastic’s French Demonstrator aims to prove the potential for the reusability of interior space plan products, such as ceiling tiles and partition walls, in an office retrofit.

Circular business models

To do this, the Demonstrator is focused on identifying a circular business model that allows for the fast market uptake of circular, reusable office space plan interiors.

Quality control

Prior to the reinstallation, the ceiling tiles were harvested by project partner, Saint-Gobain Ecophon, using a selective deconstruction process in an office location in Paris, France.

The tiles were then stored and subjected to rigorous quality control and sorting checks by fellow project partner, Saint-Gobain Paris.

A new lease of life

Following this, the tiles were installed into an office building of additional project partner, ICADE, in Aubervilliers, France, giving a new and circular lease of life to an existing office space.

Major Demonstrator milestone

The installation marks a major milestone for Drastic's French contingent, helping to prove that the re-use of ceiling tiles in office refurbishments can play a crucial part in helping to increase circularity, sustainability and to hit the European Union's (EU's) goal of a carbon-neutral Europe by 2050.

The next phase of work for this Demonstrator will involve a second re-installation with reused office partitions.

The installation has been produced by Drastic’s French partners Clipper Coramine (Saint-Gobain), Saint-Gobain Eurocoustic France, Saint-Gobain, Saint-Gobain Research Paris and ICADE.
